Emigration from Ireland

We advise a number of Irish people living abroad on how to minimise their Irish tax bill.  Two main areas of concern to clients in recent months have been:

  • Minimising inheritance tax on Irish property – we advised a number of clients with significant Irish property how to structure their Wills so that there will be little or no Irish inheritance tax payable on the property in the event of their death.

  • We have advised a number of wealthy Irish individuals living abroad on the domicile levy which came into effect from 2010 onwards.   This is a tax of EUR200,000 per year for certain Irish domiciled individuals with Irish assets of EUR5m and worldwide income of EUR1m.  It is possible for many clients living outside of Ireland to restructure their affairs so that they will not be liable to the domicile levy of EUR200,000 per year.

We have advised a number of clients on the tax implications/opportunities of leaving Ireland and taking up tax residence in another jurisdiction.  We have extensive experience of Irish individuals moving to jurisdictions such as Malta, Portugal and the UK.
